Acidity is due to excessive secretion of acid in gastric gland of the stomach, more than usual. It is characterized by sensation felt around the lower chest area mainly caused by back flow of acid into food pipe also called as heartburn. This condition is normally triggered by unhealthy food habits like spicy food, fast food and few medications. Stomach normally produces gastric acid which helps in digestion process in stomach. Acid is corrosive in nature, so it is balanced by production of prostaglandins and natural bicarbonates which are secreted in mucus lining. If this lining gets damaged, it is called as acidity.

Causes

  • Unhealthy habits like skipping meals or not eat at regular time, overeating, eating just before sleeping or eating just before bathing.
  • Food taken excessively like tea/coffee/soda/soft drinks, spicy food, Acidic food like orange or lemon or junk food like pizza, donuts or burgers.
  • Side effects of medicinelike non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, medicine for hypertension, anxiety, depression or bisphosphonates to treat bone disease.
  • Existing medical conditionlike peptic ulcer, hiatus hernia, zollinger-ellison syndrome or connective tissue disorders.
  • Other causative factors like excessive smoking,stress,excessive exercise, consumption of alcohol, lack of sleep or H pylori (helocobacter pylori) its infection by bacteria

Symptoms

Acidity is a reflux of acid in food pipe and the symptoms are as mentioned below:

  • Heartburn:A discomfort or burning pain that moves from stomach to chest or even throat.
  • Regurgitation:A sour or bitter tasting acid or partially digest food coming back in mouth or throat signifies indigestion.
  • Chest pain:Pain that start high in the abdomen is most common symptom of acid reflux, this condition should always rule out with cardiac emergency by visiting doctor immediately.
  • Stomach bloating: Hematemesis, black tarry stool or bloody stool, continuous hiccups, frequent burps, difficulty in swallowing, nausea and vomiting, feeling fullness always, chronic sore throat, restlessness or discomfort, unexpected weight loss or persistent dry cough.

Diagnosis

  • Barium swallow helps to trace narrowing of esophagus and ulcer. A solution is given and x ray images are taken.
  • pH monitoring to check acid levels in esophagus or food pipe. The device is inserted in esophagus by physician; it is left for two days to measure the amount of acid in food pipe or esophagus.
  • Endoscopy is a long, flexible lighted tube with very tiny camera at bottom (for imaging) is inserted through mouth and with help of camera esophagus and stomach is viewed. It is done with help of sedation or anesthesia.

Treatment

Drugs like antacids containing aluminum, calcium or magnesium. H2 receptor blocker (histamine blocking agents) like nizatidine, famotidine or cimetidine is used. In severe acidity proton pump inhibitors are given by doctors.

Surgery: If condition is too serious, then vagotomy is suggested to reduce the production of acid in the stomach.

HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINE

  • NUX VOMICA

Indigestion or gastric derangement is most marked symptom of it. It is main medicine for nausea and vomiting after overeating, drinking alcohol, food poisoning associated with heartburn, bloating, flatulence, diarrhea or constipation. It provides relief from hangover and removes side effects of therapeutic drugs.

  • CARBO VEG

Imperfect and slow digestion, faint and all gone sensation in the stomach which is not relieved by eating. Violent burning sensation in chest stomach and abdomen with crampy pain which compel patient to bend double. There is lot of flatulence in stomach and upper part of abdomen.

  • CHINA

Flatulence in entire abdomen in marked symptom of this drug leading to painful distension, slightly relived by belching. Eructation is sour or bitter and flatus is offensive.

  • LYCOPODIUM

Indigestion after meals indicated when there is much flatulence in lower part of the abdomen. Vigorous appetite but few morsels of food makes him feels, as if stomach is bloated. Marked craving for sweets. All complaints are aggravated between 4-8pm. Good remedy for colic in infants.

  • PULSATILLA

Thirstlessness is marked symptom of this remedy. Indigestion or gastric discomfort after rich food like fatty food, cakes and ice cream with slow digestion and belching.

  • PHOSPHORUS

Craving for cold food which is vomited out as soon as it becomes warm in stomach. Rapid weight loss with anemia.[/vc_column_text]
